Hippie Torrales began DJing at the age of 15. He came into recognition in NJ and NY after opening “Docks” with co-partner Nelson “Butchie” Nieves. After establishing himself as an innovative and creative jock, Hippie was recognized and hired to work at Abe’s Disco, which was the forerunner for Club Zanzibar. On Friday, August 29, 1979, opening night at Club Zanzibar – Hippie became the resident DJ and opening jock for the club.

During his tenure at Club Zanzibar, Hippie won the prestigious Billboard Award for the best disc jockey in the State of New Jersey – in the same year Larry Levan won the award for New York. It was the last time those Billboard Awards were held. After his resident at Club Zanzibar, Hippie went on to play all the Jersey Shore night clubs. In addition to the club gigs, Hippie worked on music production and remixing. Some of his most notable mixes of that period were Jimmy Ross’ – “Fall Into A Trance” and The Clark Sister’s – “You Brought The Sunshine”, which garnered them a 1 record of New York’s local radio station WBLS and also garnered them a Grammy nomination that year for Best Gospel.

In 1988, Hippie was approached by local record store owner, Joe from Music Village Records and asked Hippie to produce his own record. Hippie thought about the opportunity and went home, borrowed equipment from a friend and began working on his very first original production. He wrote and produced You’re Gonna Miss Me by The Turntable Orchestra, which became a club classic in Europe and has sold over 2 million copies. It was from this moment on that Hippie began traveling overseas and DJing at international clubs and began writing a music column for Discoid Magazine, which was called “What Is Hip.”

Hippie’s remixing career took off when he partnered with Mark Mendoza and created MenTor Productions. They did numerous remixes which included such artists as Lisa Stansfield, Evelyn King, D’Lacy, and most notable Rosie Gaines. In 1997, Hippie and Mark produced Rosie Gaines’ Closer Than Close, which went top 5 in the British Pop Charts and has sold over 8 million units worldwide.

To date, Hippie continues to DJ overseas and currently does an internet radio show on Tuesdays, on CyberJamz.com. He now lives in Florida and is currently collaborating on new production with Jerrell Battle and Jose Burgos of Soul Creation.

Truly a man of all musical seasons, Chicago-based producer / remixer / songwriter / DJ, and now four-time Grammy Nominee Steve "Silk" Hurley has more than proven in his 15-year plus career that he is a musical force to be reckoned with. His Grammy Nomination in January of last year for his remix of Brandy's "What About Us" is just another testament to his longevity as a producer, and yet another confirmation that "The Remix King" is here to stay. Having spanned the sometimes-limiting borders of contemporary Black music, moving freely from his Club/House music roots to his R&B/Funk roots, his musical scope as a producer has thus far remained unrivaled. Spending his childhood as a devout radio listener & worshipping musical giants from The Jackson 5 to Parliament, he developed not only a love of music, but also a keen sense of melody. Initially developing a strong reputation early on in his career as one of Chicago's hottest DJ's, "Silk" was known for his signature mixing skills and diverse mixing style. It was through exercising this creative expression that he eventually released his first single entitled "Music Is The Key", which soared to the ..9 position on the Billboard Dance Chart, establishing him as one of the pioneers of "House Music" and validating him as a producer. He quickly intensified his credentials as a producer and artist when his group, J.M. Silk, premiered on the RCA Records label and astonished the industry with a string of ..1 dance hits, including "Jack Your Body", which was ..1 on the U.K. National Chart for 2 weeks, a feat which at that time, was accomplished only by the Beetles. Since then, Hurley's productions and remixes have catapulted him to the forefront as one of the hottest talents today. In fact, his ability to musically embellish a song and take it to new dimensions has earned him the well-deserved title as one of the nation's top remixers. This is evident in some of his most prized works, including: Michael Jackson's "Jam" and "Remember The Time", Prince's "Gett Off", Janet Jackson's "Runaway", Mary J. Blige's "Let No Man Put Asunder", Crystal Waters' "Makin' Happy", Mint Condition's "You Send Me Swingin'", Sounds Of Blackness' "I Believe", Madonna's "Take A Bow", and Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love You", to name just a few. Steve's recent remixes include Jennifer Lopez's "Aint It Funny", Bob Marley's "Soul Shakedown Party", Yolanda Adams' "Open My Heart", & Melanie B's (Scary Spice formerly of The Spice Girls) "Tell Me", and more recently, the Grammy-Nominated remix of Brandy's "What About Us", Kelly Rowland's "Can't Nobody". Silk and his hot new production team, The People's Choice, most recently finished urban and dance remixes on R. Kelly's ..1 hit "Thoia Thoing", that were released in October of 2003. "Silk's" passion for music does not end, however, with remixes. His freestyle creativity expands to that of a notably outstanding songwriter / producer, penning most of his chart-topping hits. Hurley has had a pivotal hand in the success of many artists with his writing & production on such projects as CeCe Peniston's "We Got a Love Thang" (Top 20 Pop, Top 10 U.K. National Chart) "Keep On Walkin' & "I'm Not Over You"(Gold & Top 10 R&B), Kym Sims' "Too Blind To See It" (Gold, Top 10 U.K. National Chart), Ann Nesby's "Can I Get A Witness" (Top 10 U.K. National Chart) & "Hold On", Chantay Savage's "Betch'all Never Find" (Top 10 R&B), Tene Williams' "Give Him A Love He Can Feel" (Top 10 R&B), and Tanya Blount's "I'm Gonna Make you Mine" (Top 40 R&B Chart). His highly acclaimed production of Chantay Savage's "I Will Survive" (Gold, ..2 Billboard R&B Chart) was one of the biggest records of 1996. Steve recently finished production & writing for Ann Nesby's second album. His production of "Lovin' Is Really My Game", her first single, recently reached the ..1 position on Billboard’s Dance Chart. Also on the horizon is his co-writing and production effort on Rahsaan Patterson's forthcoming Album. His most recent project is “Oprah’s Pop Star Challenge” album, on Epic/Sony Records. Silk produced the entire album, which was released and launched on the Oprah Show on March 30th, 2004. He also recently inked a deal with Harpo to provide music for the Oprah Show as well. Silk added another dimension to his creative repertoire by producing 2 songs for the movie and soundtrack, "To Wong Foo", on which he was afforded the honor of working with one of his idols, Chaka Khan. The song, "Free Yourself", which became the feature track from the movie, was the result of this truly awe-inspiring collaboration. Recently, Steve co-wrote & produced a song for Donnell Jones entitled "I'll Go" for the "Love & Basketball" movie soundtrack. Today, Steve "Silk" Hurley proudly sits at the helm of his own Production & Remix Company, SilkMix.Com, which handles the hot new producer/remixers "The People's Choice", as well as Steve "Silk" Hurley himself. He also heads his record label, Silk Entertainment. The label has attained international success with several of its releases. The debut release entitled "The Word is Love" by Voices of Life featuring Sharon Pass, was an international hit, (..15 Italian National Chart, ..25 U.K. National Chart) selling over 2 million copies. Upcoming releases include The Voices of Life Compilation (featuring Ann Nesby, MeLi'sa Morgan, Chance, CeCe Peniston, Gordon Chambers, Sharon Pass, Bob Marley, and gospel sensation Vernessa Mitchell, among others) and several of Silk's DJ Mix CD's. Silk was also recently elected as President of the Chicago Chapter of NARAS (The Grammy Organization). On the business end, Silk Entertainment, Inc. has recently acquired the catalog from the following record labels: ID Records, Echotron Records, and DJ World Records. These labels were the source of some of Steve "Silk" Hurley's biggest hits from 1987 to 1993. Some of the artists in the catalog include Kym Sims, Chantay Savage, Donell Rush, Body To Body, Jamie Principle, and the work of one of the hottest Production/Remix teams ever, ID Productions. From 1988 to 1993, this team produced and wrote several hits, and remixed over a hundred..1 Dance Records for everyone imaginable, including Ten City, CeCe Peniston, Simply Red, Michael Jackson & Prince. This team consisted of Steve "Silk" Hurley, Maurice Joshua, E-Smoove, and M. Doc, to name a few. Look for re-releases and remixed versions of the ID, Echotron & DJ World Classics in the near future. Staying loyal to his passion as a DJ, "Silk " occasionally takes time out of his hectic production schedule to showcase his talents on the turntables. In 1998, Silk appeared at BET's Soundstage, on BET's "Planet Groove" TV Show as a guest DJ, and at several other venues worldwide. His "OLD SKOOL / NEW SKOOL REMIX" can still be heard every Tuesday and Thursday on the Nationally Syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show", which is broadcast on 128 stations in the US. Joyner & "Silk" have also released Volume 1 & 2 of "The Old Skool Mix CD" on Rhino Records. Volume 1 has sold over 125,000 copies in the US to date, and Volume 2 has enjoyed much success as well. Steve "Silk" Hurley has managed to parlay his love of music into a career as a producer and remixer, and in the process, has garnered more than a few impressive accolades. He received ASCAP Writer's Awards for "Keep on Walkin", "Too Blind To See It" and "I'm Not Over You". Further, Billboard Magazine recognized him as one of the top producers for 1994, which was an honor he shared with L.A. & Babyface, R. Kelly, Teddy Riley and Jam & Lewis. "Silk" has also received the British Charity Awards-U.K. "Remixer of The Year" Award and the Winter Music Conference "Remixer of The Year" Award among others. Without a doubt, however, the most prestigious honor ever bestowed upon him has been his 4 Grammy Nominations in the last 5 years (Remixer Of The Year Category in 1999 & 2000 / Best Remixed Recording in 2002 & 2003). Hurley notes, "To be honored by my peers with four Nominations is the pinnacle of the dream".

DJ Punch

Newark, New Jersey Disco DJ (June 11, 1962 - Present)
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Punch grew up in an environment rich with soulful music. Back in the day, he was influenced by his father who was a drum player and his uncle who played conga in a authentic big band.

In the mid 70's, Punch began hanging out with big name DJ's such as DISCO CHUCK who worked with RICHARD LONG, KELLY who owned CLUB SENSATIONS, MARK 4 DISCO, G.O.L.D. PROD., MR C DISCO and FUNKY BILL DISCO. Punch looked up to these guys whom took him under their wings and showed him the art of being a DJ.

Through these experiences, Punch began to make a name for himself and he began doing parties with a group of friends calling themselves GENTLEMEN OF NEPTUNE DISCO. Initially, they specialized in High School dances and House Parties. It was at this point when Punch started being influenced by NIGHT CLUBS and he encountered a whole new world thru SUPER CLUBS such as CLUB ZANZIBAR, PARADISE GARAGE, CLUB SENSATIONS, DOCKS, THE CHEETAH CLUB and CLUB BLACK BOX.

Eventually, Punch's dream of DJing at these super clubs came true and he took his DJ career to the next level. While he was DJing at the clubs he met a soon-to-be production partner, DJ SHANK. They came together with P & S PRODUCTION and began throwing wildly eclectic mobile parties at TWIN CITY ROLLER RINK, ZANZIBAR, CLUB SENSATION & THE CHEETAH CLUB (just to name a few).

Punch then hooked up with an old friend, MR. PAUL SCOTT, who took both Punch and Shank under his wing and taught them about Production and Studio work. They began working out of CLUB SENSATIONS STUDIO and called themselves B.O.P. PRODUCTION and the rest is history.

Now living in "HOT ATLANTA", Punch is still doing his thang. He hooked up with a real good friend, DJ T-GROOVE, and they are currently throwing the BIGGEST and HOTTEST PARTIES in "HOT ATLANTA", utilizing their RICHARD LONG SOUND SYSTEM. They use the name "GROOVE KIDZ" and the parties are called "BABY POWDER". The name speaks for itself !!!!!

Also see the Club Zanzibar page for more photos submitted by DJ Punch...

Interview with DJ Punch - New Jersey old school - "Hot" Atlanta now school!
1) So DJ Punch, where ya from? Where ya at????
I'm from "BRICK CITY" NEWARK NEW JERSEY now living in "HOT ATLANTA"
2) Mid Eighties New Jersey… what can you remember?
Partying at the PARADISE GARAGE , leaving there and go record shopping at VINYLMANIA in NEW YORK CITY , and get ready to dj at CLUB ZANZIBAR and CLUB SENSATIONS in NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
3) Tell us about your involvement at Zanzibar???
Me and my buddy dj shank, we was doing BIG PARTIES at TWIN CITY ROLLER RINK, then they closed, so we did not have a place to do our party for 3,000 party people who came out to dance they ass off, so we went to the owner of ZANZIBAR, and work out a deal with him to rent the club out and the rest is history from 1987 til 1993, we gave the BIGGEST party in JERSEY.
4) Can you describe “The Jersey Sound”?
The Jersey Sound starting with MOVIN' RECORDS and ACE BEAT RECORDS man they had groups that blow your mind away, like "BLAZE & PHAZE II & JOMANDA & VICKY MARTIN & KENNY BOBIEN & DEE DEE BRAVE & LACHANDRA & VALERIE INGRAM & CASSIO & BOYD JARVIS & PARK AVE & INTENSE & PAUL SCOTT and the list goes on and on man when you hear one of these group sing "LIVE" man you will catch the HOLY GHOST every time!!!!
5) Is there a Jersey Sound today – do you consider yourself a house DJ/ Jersey DJ/ Disco DJ – how do you describe what you are into and does it matter???
I will always be a JERSEY DJ , because my roots are here in jeresy, I'm from the old school, I was djing in the 70's so we had all the good music that was made back then, and all the great dj's like LARRY LEVAN & TEE SCOTT & TIMMY REGISFORD & DJ HIPPIE & LARRY PATTERSON & MERLIN BOBB!!!! so I describe myself as a old school dj with the JERSEY HOUSE SOUNDS.
6) Tell me 5 classics that you always like to pack and have handy to spin:
"LOVE IS THE MESSAGE" & " DISCO CIRCUS" & "KEEP ON" by D-TRAIN & "THE MUSIC GOT ME" by VISUAL & " DON'T MAKE ME WAIT" by NEW YORK CITY PEECH BOYS.
7) Is today’s music as good as (say just different) or better than yester years???
NO!!! NO!!! today music is no where better then the old school music, the reason is the new music don't have that REAL SOULFUL sound, and that's because the old school music have that 'LIVE BAND playing the music, they are playing right from there HEART and SOUL with feeling, you can sit down and hear the true sounds come out of those records, NOW THAT'S REAL MUSIC!!!!
8) Who are some of your favorite current producers and what do you like about them?
"MASTERS AT WORK" there no more to be said but they are the best in our time right now right along with "BLAZE" who are real good friends of my, those two are THE REAL DEAL right now.
9) Are artists/ producers/ DJs of today making and spinning future classics???
Yes they are. What are your “future classics” if any?? "RELEASE THE TENSION by COLONEL ABRAMS
10) Are you where you want to be with your DJing? Where would you like to head with this?
Yes I'm happy where I'm at, I like to take it step by step and learn everything I need to now about the music world, I would like to go around the world with this and share the music with other people that will be nice for to do one day.
11) Tell us about your local scene?
Well right now I'm in "HOT ATLANTA" me and my buddy dj t-groove are doing the BIGGEST HOUSE PARTY in ATLANTA call BABY POWDER we call our self "GROOVE KIDZ" people are going crazy over us right now because of our RICHARD LONG SOUND SYSTEM and the style of music we are playing and we both from the OLD SCHOOL scene "PARADISE GARAGE" and CLUB ZANZIBAR and now the top club in NEW YORK CITY right now is CLUB SHELTER
12) Any shouts goin’ out?
My mother and my kids and family and all who help me on the way I like to say I love you all

Peace House People

This week we proudly bring you a fantastic DJ and friend ...hailing from Chicago...

DJ Bigg Easy

I’ve been a fan of music for years and around dj’s since 1979. I partied at places like The Warehouse, Sauers, The Playground and The Pleasure Dome. I have seriously grown to love this music. About a year ago I started wanting to play. Under the tutelage of Greg Gray (NuBang Clan) and my wife Celestethedj and with the support of Gene Hunt (who gave me my dj name) I started on my journey of learning how to mix this music we all love….HOUSE! Over the past year I have played with the likes of Chicago’s hottest dj’s like: Andre Hatchett, Black Terry, DJ Ronnie, DJ Boxx, Vick Lavender, Mario Romay, Aaron Dae and Celestethedj. I’ve played various internet radio shows on Cyberjamz.com, and various Chicago Clubs. I currently have a weekly residency every Wednesday @ City Life with my partners Organic Soul. My goal is to continue playing and learning all the different aspects of this art as a remixer and in production. As junior producer with Sophisticado Recordings, Im well on my way, all in all I just want to keep having fun!

THE GUEST SPOT FT DJ CHRIS S - CITYDJ - CHICAGO

Download this episode (62 min)
About CITYDJ AKA DJ CHRIS S

(1984-The Enlightenment) - He was 14 yrs old when house music invaded his senses. Leaving him clueless as to what was taking place in his young life. He was hypnotized by repetition, continuous 4 bars, and farley keith. Not yet a witness to a live set, he could hear that tarzan call, and that train passing thru his brain every day. He became an introvert, leaving his weekends for the hot mix 5. He would record the sets religiously, and his mother would wonder what all this is about. He knew something she didn't....why? It was for the blend, that love 2 tracks had for each other as they became one. He knew his calling, he knew that mixing tape decks wasn't enough for him. He had to learn about that feelin that moved him. So he goes on his quest to become a (DJ). He hears about a record shop that could help his cause, so he goes to Imports(downtown chicago) and there before him are hundreds of records. He looks around, then leaves..not before seeing a record label that said Precision records and a number. (1985- The Culture...Seeking knowledge) - "Damn this music is fast and deep" He said as the record said " come on let roll the rest of the tape now". Ron hardy, and the music box showed him a different side to deephouse. He would go back to the southside with a little more knowledge...the power to move the crowd, and he wanted that. Mendel, leo, academy of our lady, any south loop hotel party...he was there. (1986- He became (DJ CHRIS S) - He got his first set of turntables, and becomes an introvert again retreating to his bedroom...now called "The lab". Tryin to blend dum dum, with on and on. He knew it would take time, and he made time for house music. He's at the end of the year and now he is a true (DJ) because he has made them one. DJ CHRIS S has been a solid fixture in the house scene for over 20 yrs now, playing a supporting role in the progression of house music in chicago.Admiring all the pioneering DJ's of his day, he new that there was a sound, and vibe he wanted to create all his own. After mastering his skill in beatmatching, Chris s sought out the mechanics of house music , and became a producer. Teaming with his childhood friend brison p form the group "Housemen", took a journey in the world of producing house. Two years after forming the duo housemen, our first track "scream" was released on rockin house records thanks to owner Rodney Baker. Although the housemen project didn't last, Chris s went on to open his mobile DJ, and Entertainment company(Citydjproductions,Inc). Chris s has not looked back, but has gone forward to put together the best mixes and original tracks around today, and now can count himself among the top DJ's he has so admired through out the years. Look for DJ CHRIS S to make waves in the house scene for years to come!

Greetings House Family

I would like to thank Markus Rice and Jimi Zulu for putting together more than just a radio show, but yet a close group of House Family.

Thank you to all of the DJ's and even more importantly the listeners. The support of both is what made Rawcast such a great place to be.

In my time there I learned a ton about how Internet radio works and many of the components that make a great show. Rawcast radio will always have a special place in my heart.

With that being said these two shows are dedicated to Rawcast and from my last Sunday show.

Blessings to Markus, Jimi and all of the Rawcast Family.

Wishing you the very very best.

The Guest Spot ft DJ Walter Stallworth of Chicago

Download this episode (73 min)
This week we proudly bring you

DJ Walter Stallworth of Chicago.

My DJ career began when I enrolled at Whitney Young high school. It was there where I learned about house music. My fellow classmates educated me about it. I spent my Friday nights listening to Frankie Knuckles, The Hot Mix 5, Steve Hurley and Pharris Thomas to name a few. I got a job after school and got enough money for turntables and starting buying records at Imports and Loop records. I just made tapes for friends but it was fun. When I got into college I had the blessing to play for some of the Alpha Phi Alpha parties at IIT. I left DJing and focused more on work and a career. At my current job I met Shelby Ruff, the man who would become my best friend and as we talked we found out we had DJing in common. With his help, I started to DJ once again. Once back I was influenced by Mel Hammond, Jevon Jackson, Mark Grant, Derrick Carter, Mark Farina and DJ Meet (who's house tape was the first house I had heard in 8 years). I've been fortunate enough to play at Lava Lounge, Katakomb, Zentra,Transit, Betty's Blue Star, BigWig ( now called Four ), Jo De Presser's internet radio show, Beviamo and LeTorque's loft parties. I'm always striving to get better as a DJ and hope to become a good producer as well. I hope to take my act global and share what I offer to a global audience. I firmly believe in the quote " play what you feel and feel what you play". Take care and thanks for stopping by. Peace

THE GUEST SPOT FT DJ ALAN KING OF THE CHOSEN FEW - CHICAGO

Download this episode (80 min)
GREETINGS HOUSE FAMILY,

WE ARE CELEBRATING CHICAGO HOUSE MUSIC. WITH THAT BEING SAID WE BRING YOU ONE OF THE BEST..ONE OF THE...CHOSEN FEW DJ'S. LADIES AND GENTLEMAN PLEASE WELCOME..

DJ ALAN KING

I am proud to be one of Chicago’s original house music DJs and to be regarded by many as among the “founding fathers” of house. In the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, as a member of the legendary DJ crew “The Chosen Few” (Wayne Williams, Jesse Saunders, Tony Hatchett, and Andre Hatchett), I was among the Chicago DJs primarily responsible during this period for popularizing the underground dance music that came to be known as “house music.” Before the creation of the "Hot Mix 5," the Chosen Few were largely responsible for introducing the underground style of dance music then being played by Frankie Knuckles at the Warehouse to largely straight, teen-age audiences in Chicago. Among other venues, the Chosen Few were resident DJs at The Loft, a club of historic importance in the birth and development of house music. Every July 4th weekend in Chicago, we hold the Chosen Few House Music Reunion Picnic, which has grown into one of the largest, most anticipated house music events in the world--often called the "Woodstock" of house music. Check out some Picnic video below. After a 15-year “retirement” from the scene, I returned to active DJing in the year 2000, and can now be heard at various clubs and underground parties throughout Chicago. I also have numerous mixes featured on the world's greatest house music web site, www.DeepHousePage.com. For my events calendar and latest news, please go to www.chosenfewdjs.com. Although my roots are in disco and deep house, I also lead the Nu Bang Clan (www.nubangclan.com), a collective of house music DJs around the world who are dedicated to advancing the cause of new underground dance music. I am also honored to be one of the featured DJs in the documentary film,"The Unusual Suspects:Once Upon a Time in House Music"

PEACE AND GREETINGS HOUSE FAMILY.

THIS WEEK WE RETURN TO THE EAST COAST AND BRING YOU A SISTAH WHO'S SOULFUL AND SULTRY.

PLEASE GIVE A WARM WELCOME TO DJ SASSYAZZ OF NEW JERSEY

I'm a straight up house junkie what can I say. I love it, I live it...I breathe it! This is my way of letting my friends hear how i'm progressing in djing. I'm new to the art of djing, but definitely not new to this thing we call HOUSE! I began dabbling with djing since March 07 when a friend gave me a software program. The software was fun and I discovered that I had potential, but the real passion began when another friend showed me how to mix on equipment. That one mix session lit a fire in me and a deeper passion to learn. So this past summer (July 07) I bought my own equipment and haven't looked back since.

I'm also a freelance web developer/designer and graphic artist. I write poetry, short stories and one of these days hope to finish the manuscript I began some years ago. I'm rather artsy and creative with crafts also. I guess you can say i'm an all around creative soul. I have a passion for many things. However, after God, my child and my family....there's nothing i'm more passionate about than house music.

THE GUEST SPOT FT DJ RICARDO TORRES OF LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA

Download this episode (77 min)
PEACE HOUSE FAMILY,

THIS WEEK WE COME BACK TO THE STATES TO LOS ANGELES TO FIND A GREAT MIXOLOGIST HOLDING IT DOWN ON THE WEST COAT.

WE BRING YOU DJ RICARDO TORRES

The music of West Coast DJ, Ricardo Torres can best be described as a blend of deep, soulful house inflected with the particular sound of the west coast vibe, sultry and smooth. He plays the music that house heads love to dance to; confident that when the music flows from hands that love house it can be an uplifting, groovy and sexy experience.

“I am on an eternal quest to achieve that perfect mix – (that’s) when the ideal tracks come together to form a superbly flawless union”.

Ricardo has been on this quest ever since his first chance encounter at the turntables, in 1987 at his college radio station. Shortly thereafter in 1988, he was first introduced to house music. Ricardo quickly changed his direction and followed the early days of Chicago Acid House. He moved towards this style of music since he found it to have a new and unfamiliar energy within itself.

In 1995 Ricardo, moved to Los Angeles, a city basking in sunrays and radiating the good vibes he himself perpetuated. And here, Ricardo discovered the funky, soulfulness of the west coast sound. Many of his early hero’s such as Jay-J, Chris Lum, Julius Papp, Mark Farina, and others gave him the desire to gravitate towards this deeper, more soulful West Coast style.

While still a local Los Angeles DJ, Ricardo - inspired by his love for this genre-decided early on in the year 2000 to post his mixes online to share with the world. This act of sharing his musical vision without prejudice or limitations caused him to be sought after to play his brand of house music in cities all over the world. Since then, Ricardo has played in various clubs in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas, Miami, Montreal, Toronto, Belgrade, and London. And he continues to offer up his masterful mixes, as host of syndicated radio shows online as well as on satellite radio in the USA.

Within the recent past Ricardo has teamed up with a very talented band of Deep House DJ’s called West Coast Collective. He found this to be the perfect collaboration since the members of West Coast Collective share the same passion for the music and maintain the same ideals of the genre. They are committed to bringing exceptional music and a beautiful vibe to the people while honoring the culture of house music. But most of all, Ricardo just loves playing music that inspires the heads to get up and dance!

THE GUEST SPOT FT PHIL TOKE AND THE OHM OF SYDNEY, AUSTRAILIA - OBAMA TRIBUTE

Download this episode (49 min)
PEACE HOUSE FAMILY,

WITH THE INAUGURATION COMING SOON,WE WANTED TO FIND AN ARTIST WHO HAS MUSICALLY PUT IT IN PERSPECTIVE. FROM SYDNEY AUSTRALIA WE PRESENT..

DJ PHIL TOKE AND THE OHM (OUR HOUSE MOVEMENT)

Phil Toke is a Sydney-based DJ and founder of Our House, a regular night dedicated to deep soulful house and classic disco.

The launch of Our House has marked a new chapter in Sydney’s dance music experience, providing lovers of house and disco with a uniquely intimate setting to kick back and relax or get down and dirty with some of Sydney's most talented dj's and musicians. Raising the roof with every party, Our House provides Sydney with a much needed outlet to enjoy quality tunes…and is turning quite a few heads while it’s at it.

Phil’s eclectic musical style encompasses everything from soulful house and deep house to disco, soul, and funk. His broad musical scope and technical skills don’t cloud his philosophy to his work though – he keeps that simple. To keep the quality music flowing, to play with passion and to always keep it real.

Having kicked off his career in 2000 by winning the annual Macquarie University DJ competition and qualifying for the State finals, Phil has racked up a countless number of sets across Sydney at venues such as Favela, Trademark, Home, Goodbar, Arthouse, Civic Hotel, The Burdekin and Candy’s Apartment. He is also a guest DJ for Sydney's most respected house crew, Soulful House Experience (SHE). In the past two years alone, Phil has played alongside some of the world’s most influential house DJs and vocalists including Marshall Jefferson, Ron Carroll, Copyright, Timmy Vegas, Simon Dunmore, Peyton, Julie McKnight and Chuck Love

In 2008 Phil also embarked on his tour of the Middle East, playing at popular party destinations around Beirut and in Dubai. These included famed clubs such as Crobar and the Basement.

With a dedication to bringing the music to the people and doing it…strictly for the love… 2009 looks to be another huge year for Phil and the Sydney faithful

Our House Movement (OHM) is a collective movement to promote and support ‘real house' and classic disco in intimate, friendly and personal environments throughout Sydney.

This 'real house' sound encompasses everything from deep, organic, jazzy, soulful, gospel, latin, and african tipped house music.

This vision is enabled by holding regular 'Our House' parties, which aim to restore the heart and soul into Sydney clubbing culture. Creating a party vibe that cannot be explained, but only felt. Playing music that touches the soul, whilst using live vocalists and musicians.

Our passion for this sound is heavily influenced by house music’s roots, which evolved from New York’s disco scene in the late 70’s. Inspiration is also drawn from the DJ’s and producers who have helped develop this sound. Figures such as Frankie Knuckles, Marshall Jefferson, Dennis Ferrer, Kerri Chandler, Norman Jay, Joey Negro, Danny Krivit, Stephen Allkins, Theo Parrish, Lil Louis and Masters At Work.

Together we can continue the evolution of this beautiful sound, and help it to flourish in Sydney like never before. The possibilities are endless.

This is our house music!

THE GUEST SPOT FEATURING DJ RUSSELL RUCKMAN - Brighton & Hove, United Kingdom

Download this episode (80 min)
GREETING AND BLESSINGS IN YOUR NEW YEAR

THIS WEEK WE GO TO THE UK IN SEARCH OF THE SOULFUL.

LADIES & GENTLEMAN.

PLEASE WELCOME..... DJ RUSSELL RUCKMAN

Russell’s first DJ experiences started at the very young age of 10 playing classic house, soul and hip hop at youth club disco’s, getting up in front of a crowd at such a young age fueled Russell’s confidence for what he was dreaming about pursuing as a career. Moving on in 1993 Russell was fortunate enough to land himself with a Saturday job as a studio manager answering the phone’s for the legendary Freedom FM, Brighton’s first legal dance station, this is where Russell really began to gain some good experience about the industry and meet other like minded people.

In 1995 Russell worked for DFM 101.4, this time his role was a lot more involved, he did everything from help build the studio to engineer outside broadcasts and he was also lucky enough to have his own show giving him the exposure he needed to begin his quest as a DJ. At DFM Russell was working alongside the like’s of Marshall Jefferson, Dave Clark, Rob Blake, Norman Cook & The Ragga Twins to name but a few, from here on Russell began to secure gig’s playing at various venues around Brighton & Hove.

Growing up as a teenager in the early nineties Russell was heavily influenced musically by the likes of Bobby & Steve, Tony Humphries, Joey Negro and his biggest inspiration Paul Trouble Anderson. In July 2007 Russell located himself in Bournemouth for just over a year where he was working on a number of different projects including promoting Get Spinny & Ultra Phunk Delite he was also playing at Havana’s, One Seven Six & The Bazaar Bar, during this time he also made trips to London to play for Bar 54 and heygorgeous. While in Bournemouth Russell was taken on board as a resident DJ and co promoter for one of the south coast biggest soulful house brands God Made Me Funky.

In August 2007 Russell & God Made Me Funky headman Paul Horne aka De Hornet presented a weekly Saturday morning radio show on local station Deep Blue FM. Following on from the success of the radio show Russell collaborated once again with God Made Me Funky this time promoting a boat party followed by an all night after party in Bournemouth where Russell had the pleasure in booking The Legendary Paul Trouble Anderson & Sy Sez of the Fanatix and the Aphrodisiax.

Not only is Russell a remarkably talented DJ with an exquisite taste in house music but he has also proved himself to be a successful promoter too. Russell is really beginning to make movements in the world of soulful house and has quite a following in Brighton, London and Bournemouth as well as becoming known for his popular mixes, podcasts and radio shows in other parts of the world. Russell has an extensive knowledge and a massive passion & confidence for the music he plays and with his unique blend of uplifting soulful house he always creates a great atmosphere and has everyone up on the floor.

Upfront collection of deep and soulful house with an old classic thrown in for good measure.
